A new national study by DataDiggers explores the vacation behavior of Romanians in 2025 — and the results reflect a society in transition. From remote work on the beach to fears of wildfires and rising prices, summer holidays have taken a new shape.

Conducted in July 2025 with a nationally representative sample of 1,000 urban Romanians, the study paints a nuanced picture of where people go, how much they spend, and how climate and technology now influence the way they travel.

Most Romanians Travel — But Their Laptops Come Too

While 75% of Romanians planned a vacation this year, the line between work and rest is increasingly blurry. 1 in 3 Romanians admits to working while on holiday — with the figure rising to 41% among young adults (18–29). For many, vacation now includes checking email and joining Zoom calls from hotel lobbies or Airbnb kitchens.

Where Are People Going?

  • 42% stayed on the Romanian seaside, followed by trips to the mountains and European cities.
  • 29% traveled abroad, with Greece, Italy, and Bulgaria topping the list.
  • Budget constraints and convenience drove 57% to choose local destinations.
  • Surprisingly, 13% made no bookings in advance, embracing spontaneity.

Climate Worries and Cautious Planning

The environment is playing a larger role in travel decisions.

  • 39% of respondents said they altered travel plans due to fears of extreme weather.
  • 30% experienced discomfort due to heat during their vacations — especially on the seaside and in southern Europe.
  • These concerns signal a growing awareness of climate volatility and a preference for “safer” destinations.

Romanian Tourism Faces Challenges

When asked to rate domestic tourism services, Romanians gave an average score of 6.3 out of 10.
Top complaints included:

  • overpriced accommodations,
  • lack of cleanliness,
  • overcrowded areas, and
  • poor service training.

Still, proximity, familiarity, and shorter travel times kept most travelers close to home.

What Drives Travel Decisions?

  • Budget is the most influential factor (50%).
  • Family or partner recommendations influence 46% of respondents.
  • Accommodation quality matters to 45%.
  • Among Gen Z, social media ranks high (30%) as an inspiration source.

Who Travels, and With Whom?

  • 69% travel with their partner,
  • 35% travel with children,
  • Only 5% travel alone.

These numbers indicate that vacation in Romania remains largely a family-oriented activity, with solo trips still rare.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Vacations in 2025 reflect a hybrid lifestyle —digital, cautious, and budget-aware. The rise of remote work, climate anxiety, and economic pressure has redefined how, when, and where people take breaks. Domestic tourism continues to serve as a practical choice, but expectations are shifting — and so are priorities.
